Diamond Jubilee Celebrations …

Whilst many will no doubt be celebrating in the days ahead the amazing achievement of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee back in the UK;, there will be many of her loyal subjects wishing her the very best on this historic day from here in Spain. Many expats are organizing their own street parties watched by their bemused Spanish neighbours who invariably join in on the fun.

The Spanish have their own celebrations and here in Murcia as the summer approaches the calendar is filled with festivals, fiestas and family celebrations which involve the whole community.

Below is a selection of local entertainments in Murcia over the forthcoming months.

In the attractive traditional town of Caravaca de la Cruz not far from the region’s capital there are the on-going celebrations with themes such as wine, horses and a daily artesan market all of which form part of the annual fiesta for this historic town with its very grand cathedral which looks down upon the church from its hilltop location.

tapasThis weekend is the celebration of the “Ruta de Tapas” in Cartagena, a particular favourite of mine. Seventy two bars participate in a Tapas route, offering great traditional small Tapas dishes for just 2.50€ each including a small beer or glass of wine! Each restaurant produces their own specific house speciality tapa and the idea is to wander from bar to bar enjoying a fine tapa and drink in each and then to move on. To entertain the crowds of people meandering through the historic Roman port of Cartagena there will be street entertainers, including dance performances and theatre. Combined with this is “La noche de los museos” – the night of the museums – being a fantastic way to see the history of Cartagena for free until 2.00am.

For those looking for a bit more thrill rather than culture why not charter a luxury Monterey speedboat with certified RYA skipper and enjoy the experience of a lifetime.  Choose from a range of activities and watersports on offer or if you prefer, just to relax enjoy the trip soaking up the sun on your own sunbathing platform or discover the array of beautiful beaches and islands in the Mar Menor. The experience is available for up to 6 people and you can book from 1 hour to a full day. The choice is yours. www.4youmurcia.com

Or perhaps for the more energetic amongst you try Kayak Safaris

beach_los_alazaresThe lagoon of the Mar Menor has many islands and beaches which can only be accessed via the water.  Since the water is very shallow in many areas, kayaks provide the ideal vehicle to explore.  The excursion can be adapted to suit your fitness and your ability.  Enjoy bird watching or snorkelling (depending upon the time of year) and discovering the fantastic array of wildlife above and below the water.

So whilst many of us might not be able to be back in Britain to enjoy the magnificent occasion of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond jubilee we will indeed be raising a glass of chilled Cava in the Murcian sunshine to toast her remarkable achievements.
