Guns of Portman

Bateria de CenizasEnjoy a lovely walk up to see the incredible guns at Portman.  This is an easy, but quite a long walk, which takes you from the edge of La Manga Clubs West Course up to the top of Calblanque National Park. The views all the way up the 2.5km of dirt road are stunning, looking over the bay of Portman and across the vast blue of the Mediterranean.

From the top you can see as far as Morocco on a clear day.  The national park of Calblanque is laid out before you.

The guns themselves are very impressive and date from 1920's.  These are British built Vickers and Armstrong 381mm guns.  These guns were finally decommissioned in the 1990s and appeared in the film "The Guns of Navarone".

The buildings or bateria are very interesting, and were constructed in 1931.  There are two lookout towers at the top.  There are 3 Pozos used for storing the shells, and several buildings which formed the accommodation block and workshop for the company who lived and worked in the battery as part of the defence of the coast.

Where to Find the Walk

Go past La Manga Club and straight on past the West Course.  Almost immediate at the end of the manicured greens and fairways of the West Course there is a small turning to the right, signed Llano del Beal with a weight restriction sign.  The car park is there on the right.  Walk from the car park across the road and up the hill.  The beginning of the trail is signed and has a five bar gate about 400m farther along in the direction of Portman.

Be Prepared

There are some very steep drops to the side of the path with little or no fences. Along the road are low walls which make great seats to catch your breath, but don’t lean back too far.

There are no facilities at the guns, so you should take plenty of liquids.

The walk will take 30 - 40 minutes on the way up, less on the way back down.
